Case Study
Ahuja Medical Center Expansion and Drusinsky Sports Medicine Center
Richards undertook a signage and wayfinding project for Ahuja Medical Center's expansion and Drusinsky Sports Medicine Center establishment. This included designing and implementing interior and exterior signs, donor recognition displays, and an innovative wayfinding system for hospital navigation.
The Challenges
- Integrating wayfinding into an expanding and complex medical facility.
- Coordinating with various stakeholders including the art curator and donors.
- Ensuring easy navigation across different zones within the hospital, including the original hospital, Risman Medical Center, S pavilion, and Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute.
- Designing a flexible sign system that could be easily updated without causing damage to infrastructure.

The Approach
- Redesigning all exterior signs, including new monuments and wayfinding for new locations.
- Color-coding parking lots and hospital zones for easy identification.
- Developing interior maps showing different zones within the hospital.
- Collaborating closely with the art curator to integrate donor recognition with art installations.
- Creating a new sign system with a unique numbering strategy for each room, incorporating magnets for easy updates.
The Results
- Over 2,200-2,500 signs were designed and installed for various rooms and areas.
- A new, cohesive wayfinding system was established, seamlessly integrating phases one and two of the hospital.
- The use of distinct colors for different areas (e.g., orange for Drusinsky, teal green for sports medicine) aided in navigation.
- Unique wayfinding solutions were implemented, such as three-dimensional signs and color-coded directories.
- Custom elements were added, like donor names on the basketball court and a transparent color rendering of the Cleveland Browns stadium on windows.
- This project not only enhanced the functionality and aesthetics of the UHAhuja Medical Center and Drusinsky Sports Medicine Center but also set a newstandard in hospital wayfinding and signage design.
